PARIS: A Fetish Explosion & More Info!!!
__________________________________________
(thanks to T & Wargoth)
Looks like Paris has come even farther along in the Fetish World than I had previously imagined! Hot on the heels of the report from Paris last issue comes a BUNCH MORE Cool Info on the Paris Scene! :-)
"I have a few things to add to the C.C.'s guide to Paris. Besides the Equalizer (http://www.equalizer-fr.com) here is what is worth checking out while in Paris:
Alien Nation (http://www.aliennation.claranet.fr). Monthly club. DJs, photo exhibits, elaborate performance (SUSPENSION CUBE is a sort of an avant-garde soap opera with each month's episode continuing the theme of the previous installations. Follow the plot).
La Nuit Élastique(06 86 30 71 87, mailto:talons@francemel.com), every once in a while. Younger crowd, wacky, more dancing, less play. Kind of a "baby Torture Garden", or a good night at BAGG when the frat boys forget to show up.
Fetichic (06 80 25 10 90). Also once in a while. Look out for the flyers.
Le Bar Bar (01 48 05 76 77, 9 Rue de Crussol). It is a fetish bar, with play areas. Fairly often they host some special events. Open nightly. It is sort of inconspicuous, push a little white button on the wall that says "Bar Bar", an unmarked door opens and the guy comes out to talk to you. Then he will or will not let you in.
Tribal Act (61 Rue Amelot), Right near M. Oberkampf. Tattoo parlor, photo exhibits. Stop by to chat and pick up the club flyers.
La Boutique Dèmonia (http://www.demonia.com). 10, Cité Joly, 5 min walk from M.Père Lachaise, just off la rue du Chemin Vert. This store easily kicks the London's Paradiso's ass. Besides clothing and toys they carry some neat genital-themed jewelry, big video collection, host S&M demonstrations, and so on.
Also look out for any flyers for "Les soirées Mastermind". Attending these might require a few phone calls.
Right across the street from Dèmonia is an erotic bookstore La Musardine (122 rue du Chemin Vert, http://www.lamusardine.com) where you can find anything from complete works of De Sade to fetish comic strips.
For specifically gay stuff pick up the "e-m@le magazine", you can find it in many places in Marais, and also in the Dèmonia boutique. Detailed club and sex parties calendar.
If you are just looking for some off-beat stuff, not specifically fetish, check out the event calendar in NOVA Magazine.
And a few general observations:
Most
clubs have a dress code. However, a few will have some basic leather stuff
(pants, vests, etc.) to rent at the door. You will still look like a dork
in ill-fitting pants but at least you will get in.
Some places charge single men a stiff cover (if admit them at all). Call
ahead of time and ask.
As anywhere in Europe, the Paris scenes (fetish, s&m, gothic, leather
gay, etc.) are somewhat more segregated than around here, racial harmony
needs some work, overt male bisexuality is not always accepted as opposed
to the female one, and so on and so forth. Observe the people around you
and make an extra effort to avoid doing something inappropriate..."

"SPANK": A Pervs-Eye Review (0r two.)
_________________________________________________
(thanks to Anne & John)
San Francisco recently had a showing of a very BDSM oriented play entitled "SPANK." While this original performance may have been initially well-intentioned, members of the BDSM community who attended the show had very mixed feelings about the play. It seems the main gripe was that some of the messages that the authoress-star purported were messages these audience members felt gave a very unbalanced impression of our world to non-Fetish members of the audience. Mistress Marisha slammed the play in her regular column in the San Francisco Bay Guardian. You can read that review at: www.sfbg.com/truth

"I was not that impressed by it, myself. I thought that she made some oversimplified psychological assessments about BDSM. Her take is that she eroticised damaging experiences (i.e. childhood abuse) to make them something she can deal with. That is valid for herself of course, but given that she did it in a play, a very public forum, she very effectively furthered the wrongful perception that we are all sick and do BDSM because of a psychological problem.
I don't submit for that reason; I even think I am quite centered and balanced! I don't do any of the adventure sports I like out of some psychological flaw, either. I love adventure sports for the *intensity*. They are intense physically, emotionally (fear, joy), mentally and maybe spiritually as well, depending on what happens and the surroundings. BDSM is the only thing I know that is intense *sexually*, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and physically. It can be *very* intense in all these facets in one very good connection. Nothing else in the world can be such an powerful experience involving *all* of me.
The *other* thing about the play that struck me in a negative way was her comments on the BDSM Scene. She was taken to a party by a very inconsiderate Top who abandoned her in the social area. There she was hit on by some other very determined Top. She described the people at the party as very unappealing and said that she wouldn't even want to have a buffet with them, much less play with or in front of them. All I can say is that she certainly didn't go to an Iniquity event! Yes, there are jerks everywhere, it's a shame that she ended up with one taking her to her first, and only, play party and that she had to draw her conclusions from that."

Scotland
>
The Scotland Fetish Scene has undergone some major changes in the last few months. At one point the foremost Fetish Club shut it's doors with only a small chance of anything taking its place. Then suddenly a SLEW of Fetish activities sprang forth, like some Hydra on steroids. INIQUITY's Scotland connection, Wargoth, gives us the event listings below...
"Fetish Announcements from the Hellfire Club Mailing List http://www.hellfire.co.uk/ - Clubs in Edinburgh and Glasgow...
"It's strange to think that although a couple of others had briefly tried, nobody believed Scotland could ever sustain a fetish culture. Just look at the thriving and growing scene we now have. As our clubs developed, we saw all manner of cutting edge artists and performers along with imaginative members and visitors make the Scottish scene, at least for a while, a unique, unified and mutually supportive culture. The good thing is that the scene is now here to stay. New, highly imaginative and professional events organizers are giving Scotland the kind of clubs that we all deserve.
##Clubs in Scotland - Edinburgh
SIN: Next one expected in February - more details to follow. Fantastic new Edinburgh fetish club. Tickets available from 0141 554 9385 or Tribal Body Art,248 The Canongate, Edinburgh and Hellfire Clothing, Flip Basement, 72 Queen St. Glasgow. Info email sinner.2000@virginnet.co.uk
## Clubs in Scotland - Glasgow
SLAVE: Important
Update - the SLAVE launch in Glasgow has been rescheduled for February.
This is the new Scottish fetish-style superclub for sexy and stylish people.
Akin to Fantastic or Submission down south, SLAVE promises the best of music
and glamour for Glasgow. The organizers state that: SLAVE IS FOR ALL OF
THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN THERE AND DONE IT AND GOT THE T -SHIRT. SERIOUS CLUBBING
THAT'S GOT THE LOT. Encouraging everyone regardless of race, creed or sexual
orientation to come along and get funky, SLAVE advocates hedonism in the
extreme (although their idea of extreme may be a little different to ours),
urging freedom of expression through shedding of inhibitions and, for the
truly daring, clothing.
Anything goes, in a nutshell. The venue has been radically redesigned and
furnished, and cleverly manages to suit even the most outlandishly dressed
clubbers by being incredibly easily accessible while being away from the
main club and pub crowds. Brilliant!
VOYEURISM: A risqué club night of heavy sexual overtones bringing together the cream of Scottish DJs , with diverse and innovative performers. Archaos, 25 Queen Street, Glasgow. Doors open 11pm, Every Sunday. Entry £5/3. Info: http://www.archaos.co.uk
MAXINE'S ADULT PLAYROOM.
FETISH.
Call 0141 572 1281 for details for club and party events.
LOVE BOUTIQUE: Big dance event with flamboyance, running on every first Saturday at Alaska in Glasgow.
Other Scotland (and Ireland!) News (from HF):
"It's good to see the scene in Scotland and further afield rejuvenating, and recently it was also good to the emerald isle booming. A special hello to our friends in Dublin. The recent Mardi Gras was phenomenal. There's an exciting new scene there, and we're happy to support it too. They have had problems in terms of censorship of publications, but are managing to circumvent archaic and daft laws and are getting on with having fun.
Some inept idiots in Scotland have created tabloid interest in the scene recently, and the scummy journos are still out there. So what do you do about it? First of all, do not cooperate in any way. Also watch out who is taking photos. They can appear in the tabloids or on web-sites and publicity for dodgy clubs without your permission. Also do not believe the tabloids when they say they just want your involvement to give a balanced view. They're lying........ ......... We're proud to say that nobody associated with the Hellfire Club has ever spoken to any tabloid journalist (or anybody associated with the tabloids) or co-operated with dodgy or lurid stories.
As a matter of policy The Hellfire Club has only ever dealt with reputable publications such as The List, The Big Issue, Edinburgh Evening News and The Scotsman, and of course the fetish and arts press. ............. Let's hope the scummy friends of the tabloids will just leave our scene."
(Ed. -- if you think the U.S. tabloids are out of hand, you should see the British Isle tabloids; for sheer irresponsibility ours cannot hold a candle to theirs!)

San Francisco's POWER EXCHANGE Update
_________________________________________________
(thanks to C.C. and M & M Powers)
Many of you who have mixed feelings about the Power Exchange may not realize that the PE's Sunday nights are Couples Only, and even the owner says they are his favorite regular night with the highest quality crowd. One long-standing and contributing member of the IQ had this to say about the PE Sunday Couples-Only nights:
"Sunday's at P.E. are couples nights -- they will not allow any single men or GISCS. (Ed. -- for those new to IQ, GISC stands for "Guys/Gals in Street Clothes"). My wife and I have gone for the last two weeks in a row and have really enjoyed it. It is very calm with less people so almost all of the furniture is available all of the time. Without all the hubbub and crowd it feels much less competitive and so far we haven't had any problems with other people forcing themselves on us or invading our scene. Both nights there have been at least a few couples who fall into the serious player category doing scenes. It's been fun to watch and learn without the huge crowd mobbing up. Anyway just thought I'd share. I think Sunday would make an excellent I.Q. night and my wife and I are already attending on a regular basis. If you knew how picky we are, you would be pretty impressed by this report. Please pass the word on."
Mike and Marie Powers have also once again made it completely clear that ALL INIQUITY MEMBERS (i.e. YOU) can get into the Power Exchange ANY NIGHT (except two; see below) for HALF PRICE by Attending in Fetish Attire and using the INIQUITY Password. The only two nights of the entire year when the discount is NOT allowed are for their Halloween Ball and their New Years Eve Ball. The other 363 days of the year are Half Price for you IF you follow the two rules (IQ Password and Fetish Attire). :-)
For more information on the proper use of the INIQUITY Password, please visit: https://clubiniquity.com/password.html

"It's Consentual Officer" -- A True Story
_________________________________________________
On the subject of the Power Exchange, take a look at one well-known member of the S.F. BDSM Community's experience there one night when someone called the cops!
(thanks to Dmitri)
"I would like to approach a topic of discussion that from time to time I see come up on the lists that I am part of: what to do when (if) the Police stop your scene. I have now experienced it first hand and I would like to share what happened.
It was about 2:50 AM. We were in the large basement area of the Power Exchange in a corner play space. I was scening at this time with someone who happens to be a very intense bottom. She was naked and restrained by my handle cuffs with her hands above her shoulders to a wall mounted St. Andrews cross. I was surrounded by fencing on my left and behind me and walls in front and to the right of me. We were about 1 hour into our scene. Up to this point I had used numerous items on her including single tails and of course floggers. At this time in particular I was again using a rather heavy flogger on her. I was flogging her back and butt when I heard a male voice call out. "Hey!" is what I heard, very forcefully I must add. Who ever it was, without a doubt wanted my attention. Turning my attention away from my sub and now to my left, I look and see that behind the cyclone fence amidst the onlookers, there stood a uniformed SF Police officer and I was the object of his attention. (Oh Joy! Lucky me!) "Yes, Officer?" Shocked I calmly asked, "May I help you?" "Can I talk to you for a moment?" He asked. I put my flogger on a table and walked to the fence. "Can I speak with you over in the corner?" He asked and pointed to the opposite corner of the play space that I occupied where the fence met the wall again. "Sure." I said. Jeanette was sitting right where we were headed so as I walked toward the corner I told Jeanette to go and stay with Sheila, the sub I was working on. I met him there and we were now one to one. Holding onto the fence he asks me, "Can you slide this fence back so that I can come in?" "There is a gate right there," I said, pointing to it. He then started to question me. "What are you doing?" He asks. "We are doing a scene." "A what?" "We are playing out a Sadomasochistic scene. She is a very close female friend of mine." (At this time numerous things run through my mind as to what may happen next. I start thinking how depending on this Officer's perception I may end up in jail). "Is she your girlfriend?" He asks. "No." I Reply. Knowing differently but trying to keep him at ease I then said, "But we are close enough that she could be." "Well, we received a call that she is here against her will." "No Sir, what we are doing is consensual." (I thought of saying Safe, Sane and Consensual, however not knowing his idea of what safe and sane are I left that out). "Would you like to come in and speak to her?" "Yes," He Said. I lifted the latch and opened the gate letting him in. He rushed past me toward Jeanette and Sheila. I then said to Jeanette. "The officer wants to speak with Sheila; you need to move out of the way" and so she did. I then said to Sheila. "Sheila, this officer wants to speak with you." Before he could ask her anything I asked him his name. "Gooden" He, Says. I put out my hand in an offering to shake hands with him and said "nice to meet you officer Gooden." He shook my hand and replied with a simple "Yeah." He then turned to Sheila and started to ask questions. "Are you OK?" He asked. With the start of his questioning I walked away in order for him to speak freely with her and to keep him from thinking that my presence would intimidate her as she answered him.
The conversation to follow is from Sheila's mouth to my fingers to my keyboard etc. "Are you here of your own free will?" He asks her. "Yes, I am." "Are you allowing him to do this to you?" "Yes, I am, this is totally consensual." He asks her again. "Are you here of your own free will?" "Yes Sir." He then moved to look closely at her back. She could feel his breath upon her now sensitive skin. Even though he never touched her, she felt totally violated. It was one thing to have the people outside the fence watching but to have one so close that she could actually feel his breath upon her gave her an eerie feeling. He then went back again to ask her another question. "Why do you do this?" He said. Sheila replied, "Because it is fun and I like it."
At this point seemingly done and apparently satisfied with what he heard from Sheila he turned to walk out of the play space. I closed the gate behind him and then walked to Sheila to make sure that she was alright and was not spooked by the incident. Sheila said that she was fine and saw this as only a minor interruption and told me that she wanted to keep going. I played a little cautiously for the next few minutes just in case the officer stayed around lurking in the shadows to watch for a reason to come back in and arrest me. We were able to continue the scene and had a great time doing so. Afterward I was told that as Officer Gooden walked out of the play space that he said "you people are sick." I understand that he actually said it several times as he walked out of the basement of San Francisco's Power Exchange. I would like to say that strangely enough this encounter was an over all positive one. But, if the officer felt like it or perceived it differently then he did, I could have quickly been taken to jail. For how long that may have been I am not volunteering to find out.
My advice based on this experience: If you find yourself in a similar position, just remember to keep calm and speak truthfully and directly with the officers. You may say everything right and handle the situation flawlessly but just remember that the officer's perception is the most important thing that will keep you on or get you off the proverbial hook. Above all be as cooperative as possible. The bottom line is that being cooperative may not keep you out of jail but doing so will be a point in your favor.
(Editors note -- Follow-Up Information:
Apparently, one of the people who witnessed the whole incident up close wrote an exhaustive and poignant letter to the local police captain (the infamous Captain Martel, who is now under investigation for having created hundreds of trumped-up charges against SOMA clubs such as 1015 Folsom). The owner of the PE, Mike Powers later had talks with BOTH this same local police captain, who Mike found out was painfully aware of his officer's indiscretion, as well as the offending officer himself who received a straight-up lecture from Mike on the inappropriateness of his behavior. Mr. Powers drew a direct analogy to criticizing men at a gay club, to which the almost-politically-aware officer replied with, "I would NEVER behave like that at a gay club!" Mr. Powers then informed the officer that effectively he had been just as judgmental in criticizing our alternative sexuality, a point which the officer appeared to finally digest. There Is Hope!)

Fetish Films of 1999 -- a Year In Review
_________________________________________________
(thanks to David)
"It was something in the air. A strange sort of pre-millennial angst permeated many areas of our culture this year, and our movie screens were not immune. Combine this frenetic "try anything" mentality (in mainstream and independent films) with Hollywood's usually curious (occasionally blasphemous) use of sexual images, and you were pretty much guaranteed an interesting year in perve film.
The year boasted the usual eye-candy in the usual places. You had the spate of "erotic" thrillers with fetishized attachments, such as ENTRAPMENT starring Catherine Zeta-Jones' vinyl-clad derriere, and GOODBYE LOVER featuring Patricia Arquette laughably miscast as a sex-crazed femme fatale (the bondage scenes fall as flat as everything else in the picture).
The fusion of human and machine, a popular staple of perve culture, was explored in quite a few films. Some of them were successful (i.e. THE MATRIX), and some of them were not (VIRUS and THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR, which we will not mention again).
We were stuck with the usual perves-as-villains subtexts to titillate and, ultimately, offend us. Evil Asian perve women hit quite a few screens: ALLY McBEAL's Lucy Liu strutted her stuff as a leathered-up, sex crazed killer in PAYBACK, and Francoise Yip carried considerable enthusiasm to her latex bondage scene in BLACK MASK. Extremely good-looking, and quite, quite pervy. Pity both actors played deranged psychotics, perpetuating Hollywood's equation of perve = psycho. This sad (no matter how stimulating) trend reached its nadir in 8MM. Though the film had some very intelligent dialogue between straight-laced private eye Nicolas Cage and even-keeled perve punk Joaquin Phoenix (imagine the buddy movie franchise this could have started!), ultimately it got too mired down in its depiction of perves as snuff-film-making serial killers to be much good to anyone, and Phoenix's character wound up brutally murdered, another three-dimensional persona sacrificed to the reactionary narratives of perve-negative Hollywood.
Phoenix wasn't the only well-adjusted perve who had a rough go of it on our screens this year. Adrien Brody and Jennifer Esposito were a _damn_ hot all-leathered-up punk couple in Spike Lee's SUMMER OF SAM, and even though Brody was suspected of being a serial killer and got the shit beat out of him for simply being too weird, it is clear that Lee's sympathies throughout the film lie with these two characters (weirdly enough, SUMMER OF SAM may have been the most sex-positive film to come out of Hollywood this year. >From Disney, no less!).
Things were safer and better for perves on San Francisco's rep screens, which have long been a haven for articulate and hot perve films. The Roxie continued to place such films throughout its schedule (though it took an Iniquity based campaign to get PREACHING TO THE PERVERTED on screen) including a revival of CRUISING (in the midst of a retrospective of films by William Friedkin). The film remains controversial to this day, but to this critic's mind is a fairly accurate, and ultimately kink-positive, trek into the leather underground of late 70s New York. Sold-out film fest screenings at the Victoria brought us the latex vampire extravaganza RAZOR BLADE SMILE, available on video, and worth a look.
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts showed on the same bill BEYOND ULTRAVIOLENCE, a film about noise artist Merzbow, which spent considerable screen time discussing the bondage themes in his work, and BITCHCRAFT, a look at European lesbian wiccan band Rockbitch that boasted much fetish and bondage and explained at great length the band's sex and kink-positive philosophy.
All was not dark on more mainstream screens, however. One film hit more mainstream venues that, in addition to many other strengths, boasted a clear understanding of perve aesthetics: THE MATRIX. IQ News has rung its praises pretty often, and with even the most cursory glance at the film itself, it's easy to see why. The costume design is the most obvious hook; for all of the film's special effects, none hit quite so beautifully as merely the sight of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss all vinyled up. mm. But the appeal of THE MATRIX goes beyond glossy special effects. This is a film in which the heroes project themselves into the "real world" armed to the teeth, dressed to the nines, and conversant in gravity-bending kung fu. The perve-as-savior motif is a new one for a Hollywood blockbuster, and apparently the readership of this e-zine weren't the only ones taken in: THE MATRIX has grossed hundreds of millions of dollars around the world. THE MATRIX beat out a bold path for perve film in 2000 and beyond, imagining sexy, high-tech worlds in which perves are heroes, and are allowed to remain so without compromising who they are. I think that's a hell of a lot more stimulating than this week's dominatrix-as-villain, don't you think?
