There'll surely be scoffing about June 18's Animal Rights Awareness Night, due to its environment- the gloomy, gothic, S&M-laden "Dark Carnival" dance night, a Friday institution at the Gotham Citi nightclub, 130 Crown Street (498-2484). Will horsewhips still be on display? Who'll be wearing leather? Yet one of the tenets of the animal rights movement is that most people are given a free choice about their lifestyles and vices and freedoms, while most animals aren't. It's a noble cause, and will provide ample proof that Dark Carnival denizens aren't just decadent hedonists but free-thinking, progressive, aware and activist, even in the dark. The DJs will pepper their dance mix with tunes by Skinny Puppy, Nina Hagen and other musicians who've used their art to further this cause of claws. They'll also be hawking GothIndustrial mix tapes for seven bucks a pop, with proceeds going to those biting lobbyists at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Pamphlets, posters and booklets from PETA and from some local animal rights groups will be distributed at one of the Dark Carnival's vendor tables. The Solemate shop on York Street is donating a pair of Vegetarian Shoes (sturdy non-leather footwear) for a raffle. All the money raised (except the admission price) goes to PETA. So don't be afraid of the dark; the creatures are friendly.

Prostitutes involved in sadomasochism should be given advice on how to sterilize their whips, according to new guidelines funded by the European Commission. Members of the oldest profession have become the latest target of the EC's lust for standardization. A handbook, Hustling For Health, was launched yesterday to show the best practice in the sex industry. The project was organized by Helen Ward, a senior clinical lecturer in Public Health at the Imperial College School of Medicine, London, and the result is being translated into nine languages. It includes advice on all aspects of prostitution, including tactics to help prostitutes to insist on the use of condoms - such as displaying "safe house" stickers on their premises - and on alerting others to dangerous customers by keeping an "ugly mug" report sheet, including a description and car registration. Co-ordinating information across 16 countries took 18 months and cost £700,000, half of which was met by the commission. It was also backed by the European Network for HIV Prevention in Prostitution. Dr. Ward said that from the legal point of view, Britain was far less liberal than countries such as The Netherlands, but in terms of the health of sex workers the country was one of the best in Europe. HIV infection rates were relatively low among British prostitutes, about 1 per cent, although she said that they could not determine whether this meant that the risk was lower in Britain or that safe-sex education was working. "Our holistic approach, linking health services to social services, has led the way around Europe," she said. "And we have some of the best sexually transmitted disease care in the world. Treatment has been freely available since 1916." Britain was the third lowest target for immigrant sex workers, with about a quarter of prostitutes coming from abroad. This was just higher than Ireland and Finland and was a result of geographical remoteness, Dr. Ward said. The handbook offers advice to health workers on starting projects with prostitutes. The first step is to "identify gaps in service delivery" for which "you need to go out on the streets", it says. "Do not rely on local rumour. Talk to the sex workers directly about their needs for services. "Even a 'madam' who has never had sexual contact with her clients may want advice on how to sterilize her whips." The guide suggests: "Prison visiting areas are a good place to make contact with sex workers."

The NOW S/M Policy Reform Project
Scored a victory in the National Convention of the National Organization for Women, which adjourned today in Beverly Hills, California. For all of us who are united in creating a sex-positive world for women and men, the Fourth of July 1999 is a day of independence. In the final plenary, convention delegates passed a new resolutio affirming NOW's "strong commitment to lesbian rights," which "embraces the rich diversity of issues and experiences that impact women's lives" and resolved that "NOW re-affirms its commitment to a lesbian rights agenda that uses a grassroots strategy to fight bigotry and discrimination based on real or perceived sexual orientation," and "replace[s] the 1980 Delineation of Lesbian Rights." This is great news! The first goal of the Policy Reform Project was to revoke language in the 1980 Delineation of Lesbian Rights which specifically condemns sadomasochism, pornography, public sex. The new resolution does not contain any references to these issues. However, NOW has NOT endorsed sadomasochism. Nor has NOW endorsed safe, sane and consensual sexual expression between adults in private or in public. Many [Vanilla] "feminists" in NOW believe that SM is the same as domestic violence or partner abuse. SM, according to their erroneous analysis, reinforces the culture of violence against women, and therefore should be outlawed, condemned and eradicated in order to end the abuse of women. Therefore, the work of the SM Policy Reform Project is not yet completed. As NOW members, our next step is to pass new resolutions which promote sex-positive policies.

Dore Alley Street Fair, THIS SUNDAY, July 25th
If you have never been to a Dore Alley Fair, think of it as a miniature Folsom Street Fair. Once visited by mere hundreds, the Dore Alley Fair has grown in only the last few years into an event attended by 3 or 4 thousand. It is a testament to the political strength of the San Francisco Gay Community, as a few city blocks get blocked off between Folsom and Howard in the SOMA district and the many of the gay community parade around in whatever they feel like (or lack there of). The Dore Alley Fair is also the home of quite a large number of BDSM related booths, and although the event is primarily gay, a mild turnout from the other communities usually shows up as well (although not on the pan-sexual scale which the Folsom Fair has taken on). The Dore Alley Fair usually has food and music as well. All in all a fun day if you have no other plans. Not for the homophobic. Michael Manning Show The work of Michael Manning (Spider Garden, etc.) will be shown in the month of August at the A.O.V. The dates are August 4 through September 4. It will feature some of his book pages as well as larger format single panel works and a number of color paintings which he has never shown before. He's still working on the material for the show, but I've seen some of it and it promises to be extraordinary. Say it isn't so. The man who made 2001, Clockwork Orange and The Shining made THIS???????? I am writing to you who have not yet made the mistake of spending the $15 to reconsider many alternatives -- for example, American Pie is juvenile yet damn funny at least. Um, er, how shall I put this? EYES WIDE SHUT was not bad -- no, that is far too positive a description. Suffice it to say that I rarely walk out of a movie and I did to this one. Now that I have lambasted the Kubrick's last, perhaps I owe you some history and perspective which may at least help you understand why EYES WIDE SHUT is such a flop. The story is basically about a couple who DOES NOTHING WRONG, has "Naughty Thoughts" and feels unbelievably (literally, as in I didn't buy it) guilty and screwed up about these Naughty Thoughts, and STILL DOESN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG. Um, I don't think this quite qualifies as a PLOT. The only conflict was the imagined peril inside the main character's heads. That said, apparently the original story was written in the 1930's. Are you saying "Ah-ha!" yet? That's the missing piece that few people are aware of. See, in the 1930's things like "Naughty Thoughts" were a very bad thing and you could go to hell for them (well, at least in some circles). But in 1999, this premise just doesn't wash anymore. These people seem like caricature from some Vanilla Hell Dark Comedy. I mean the lead male (Cruise) even bursts into tears at the end and says, "I'll tell you Everything!" and my friends and I looked at each other perplexed and asked, "about WHAT????? He didn't DO ANYTHING!" It was so utterly trumped up that I was simply praying that Kubrick did not write this. The tale most likely was written by someone who carried Atlas' share of Christian Guilt, and in 1999 it was almost laughable......almost. Unfortunately, it WAS Kubrick's choice to accompany this preposterous descent into Vanilla Hell with probably the single most irritating soundtrack ever devised. Not embellishing in the slightest, you could reproduce the soundtrack by mindlessly plinking the four left-most keys on a piano. In fact why do the work yourself -- hire a circus monkey to do it (as long as it can keep a slow tempo). I suppose this was meant to reproduce the Nagging Repetitive Guilty Thoughts.......well it certainly succeeded in the nagging part anyway. Thus, if you were hoping for a journey into some far out sex cult via the naked frames of Cruise and Kidman, you are going to be sorely disappointed. FETISH? Haahahahhahahahahahahah........these guys can't even manage the logic of how someone wearing a full-face mask could possibly perform cunnilingus. If they can't even get their Vanilla sex straight, well, you get the idea. Not a whip nor spank in the neighborhood. Hell, CROW II -- City Of Angels had more exciting S&M scenes (background shots). If you were one of the unfortunates who did see the film, I recommend the Kubrick-redeeming medication of renting Clockwork Orange. Nonetheless, I have spoken to at least 2 sources who actually liked the film. One of those sources kept going on about the slow, wild, creepiness of it all. There was something about they way they kept describing their experience of the movie. They finally confessed that perhaps the reason they liked it was because they were stoned out of their skulls. You do the math. Me? I'm placing my bets on any number of films coming out in the next few weeks. Oh yeah, American Pie really was that funny. ;-)
